In harmony with the Biosphere Reserve …

Haus Maria is located within the UNESCO Nockberge Biosphere Reserve — a model region for sustainable development, where people and nature live and work together consciously. We feel connected to this landscape and its future, and this philosophy guides our daily actions.

Why sustainability matters to us …

For us, sustainability means respect for the landscape as well as appreciation for the people who live and work here. We want to help create a place where tourism and mindfulness go hand in hand.

We constantly take a close look: What is really necessary, and what only consumes resources unnecessarily? This allows us to continuously adjust our processes — with the aim of handling nature and energy responsibly. Naturally, the comfort and well-being of our guests always come first.

We put this into practice through concrete measures.

Housekeeping & Cleaning

  • Laundry on request: Towels and bed linen are changed on request, helping to save water and energy and contribute to the careful use of resources.
  • Gentle cleaning products: We use eco-friendly, low-impact products from Hollu (an Austrian cleaning solutions company) that are kind to the environment yet maintain hygienic cleanliness and fresh, welcoming rooms.
  • Smart water savings: Our bathrooms are equipped with special inserts that noticeably reduce water flow while maintaining pressure and comfort.

Regionality & Breakfast

  • Seasonal products: Our breakfast buffet offers a little taste of Carinthia — many items come directly from local farmers and producers, ensuring freshness, authentic flavour and supporting the regional economy.
  • Minimal packaging: Wherever possible, we avoid individually packaged products. Only where it helps prevent spoilage do we offer small portions. This way, you can enjoy variety with a clear conscience.
  • Buffet with care: We refill the breakfast buffet continuously rather than preparing large quantities at once, avoiding food waste. Pre-portioned servings are consciously avoided — each guest has their own taste, so only what is truly enjoyed ends up on the plate.

Energy & Resources

  • Thermal insulation: The house has been fully thermally renovated. Modern triple glazing and high-quality insulation reduce heat loss, increase energy efficiency and create a comfortable indoor climate.
  • LED & energy-efficient appliances: All lighting is LED, and our appliances are energy-efficient, gradually reducing electricity consumption.
  • Motion sensors: Motion sensors in public areas ensure lights are on only when needed — a small detail with a big impact on energy consumption.
  • 100% green electricity: All electricity we use comes from renewable sources.
  • Waste reduction: We carefully separate waste and avoid single-use plastics wherever possible, aiming to keep resources in a cycle and reduce garbage.

Mobility & Partnerships

  • Gentle mobility: We support our guests in moving around in an environmentally friendly way, providing information about trains, the Nockmobil taxi, ski buses, hiking buses and bike rentals.
  • Public transport arrival: We gladly assist in planning an eco-friendly journey to Bad Kleinkirchheim.

To show our appreciation, we are members of ARGE Best Employer, an initiative of committed tourism and leisure businesses in our region, promoting fair work conditions and quality of life at the workplace.
  • NocksCrew: Our employees benefit from the NocksCrew, enjoying exclusive NocksCard perks, regional discounts, training opportunities and community events.

Transparency & Continuous Improvement

We see sustainability as an ongoing process. We regularly review our measures, gather feedback and develop new ideas — always in dialogue with our guests and partners.
